I've been writing for years, both creatively and academically. Over the years I've learned that one of the greatest tools we have as People of Color, is our writing. Our words, telling the stories from our own lens and positions, are powerful and have to be shared.
As People of Color, writing has been part of our legacies and we must continue it in any format. Whether that's writing fiction, nonfiction, YA, novels, poetry, articles, or any other form it takes.
What matters most is that we WRITE and then put our writing out there. Whether we publish it ourselves, or find a way to publish our writing through more formal venues, it doesn't matter, we just have to write.
Writing is our obligation and it is our responsibility to keep telling our own stories. From our voices and not the voices of others who want to tell the stories for us.
The idea behind this site, Writers of Color, is to create a shared space where we can connect with other Writers of Color in our own communities and others, and especially where we can support each other by sharing writing strategies, tips, techniques, and resources.
Most of all, this is OUR place and we don't have to be afraid of sharing what's on our minds. Here we can tell it like it is.
So here's to Writers of Color everywhere who are on the quest for demanding change and disrupting structures of power and oppression with their words and actions.
